Ferrer ousted in Nottingham opener

Top seed David Ferrer came up a second-round loser Tuesday at the Aegon Open Nottingham, a final grass- court Wimbledon tune-up.

Former Australian Open runner-up Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus doused the former French Open runner-up Ferrer 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) at Nottingham Tennis Centre. Ferrer and 15 other seeds received byes into the second round.

Meanwhile, second-seeded Frenchman Gilles Simon outlasted Spaniard Marcel Granollers 4-6, 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-0), third-seeded Spaniard Feliciano Lopez handled American Taylor Harry Fritz 6-3, 6-3 and fourth-seeded Argentine Leonardo Mayer leveled Korean Hyeon Chung 6-3, 6-1 on Day 3.

In other action involving top-10 seeds, No. 5 Pablo Cuevas beat Israeli Dudi Sela 7-5, 6-4; Ukrainian Sergiy Stakhovsky took out No. 6 Viktor Troicki 6-4, 6-2; No. 7 Dominic Thiem drubbed Tunisian Malek Jaziri 6-3, 6-1; No. 8 Adrian Mannarino bested Slovenian Aljaz Bedene 7-6 (7-4), 6-4; Uzbekistan's Denis Istomin whipped No. 9 Juan Monaco 6-1, 6-2; and Italian Simone Bolelli snuck past No. 10 Martin Klizan 6-3, 6-7 (4-7), 6-1.

Also in the second round, Ukrainian Alexandr Dolgopolov outlasted 12th-seeded Spaniard Pablo Andujar 7-6 (7-5), 6-7 (5-7), 6-4; 12th-seeded American Sam Querrey stopped Colombian Santiago Giraldo 7-6 (7-4), 6-4; German Alexander Zverev upended 13th-seeded Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci 6-7 (7-9), 6-3, 6-4; 14th-seeded Portuguese Joao Sousa snuck past Aussie Sam Groth 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 4-4; Taiwan's Yen-Hsun Lu halted 15th-seeded Italian and last week's Halle runner-up Andreas Seppi 6-4, 6-3; and 16th-seeded Czech Jiri Vesely mauled American Tim Smyczek 6-1, 6-3.

First-round wins came earlier in the day for Smyczek, Lu, Harry Fritz and Groth.

Nine seeds will take to the courts for third-round matches on Wednesday, including Simon, Lopez, Mayer and Cuevas, who will take on Querrey.
