Hoof injury spoils 'Chrome's Royal Ascot start

Reigning Horse of the Year California Chrome is doubtful to make his next start at Royal Ascot in England due to an injured hoof.

The 4-year-old colt, owned by Steve Coburn and Perry Martin, has an abscess in his right front hoof which will probably keep him out of Wednesday's Prince of Wales's Stakes.

Alan Sherman, assistant to his father Art, said that the injury is being treated and more will be known Tuesday. Unless 100 percent, California Chrome will not run Wednesday.

California Chrome was the 4-5 favorite in the Dubai World Cup on March 28, but finished second to 17-1 longshot Prince Bishop. It was his second start of the year and followed his second-place result behind Shared Belief in Santa Anita's San Antonio.

Last year's Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner has career earnings of $6,322,650 with nine wins in 18 starts.
