Verlander to start season on DL

Detroit Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander will start the season on the disabled list because of a triceps injury.

Tigers manager Brad Ausmus made the announcement Thursday morning.

Verlander left a spring training game last Friday because of soreness in the triceps and threw again on Wednesday. He was ruled out of a potential minor league spring training start on Friday.

The 32-year-old right-hander was slated to make his first start of the regular season next Wednesday against Minnesota. However, the Tigers can backdate the DL stint to March 27, making Verlander eligible to pitch on Sunday, April 12 at Cleveland.

Verlander has never been on the disabled list in his career and has made at least 30 starts in each season since joining the rotation in 2006. He was 15-12 with a 4.54 ERA in 32 starts last year.
