NASCAR driver Kyle Busch was released from a North Carolina hospital on Friday, six days after he suffered multiple injuries during an accident in the Xfinity Series race at Daytona International Speedway.
Busch sustained a compound fracture of his right lower leg and a mid-foot fracture of his left foot when he slammed head-on into an inside retaining wall that did not have an energy-absorbing (SAFER) barrier installed on it. The 29-year-old Joe Gibbs Racing driver was hospitalized at Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach, Florida for three days. He underwent surgery on his right leg just hours after his accident.
On Tuesday, Busch was transferred from Florida to North Carolina where he had surgery on his left foot the following day.
Busch drives the No. 18 Toyota in the Sprint Cup Series and the No. 54 car in Xfinity for JGR. The team has no timetable for his return to racing.
JGR announced earlier in the week that David Ragan will drive the No. 18 car in place of Busch for the next several Sprint Cup races, beginning with this weekend's 500-mile event at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Erik Jones will sub for Busch in the No. 54 entry in Saturday's 250-mile Xfinity race there.
Busch's team placed a decal that reads "Get Well Kyle!" on his Sprint Cup car prior to Friday's practice at Atlanta.
