Oklahoma head football coach Bob Stoops fired co-offensive coordinators Josh Heupel and Jay Norvell on Tuesday.
Stoops also announced that defensive line coach Jerry Montgomery will take on additional responsibilities as co-defensive coordinator along with Mike Stoops.
Heupel has served as co-offensive coordinator for the Sooners since 2011, having served on Stoops' staff since 2005.
He played for Stoops at Oklahoma and was the Heisman Trophy runner-up and Walter Camp Award winner in 2000. He recorded a 20-5 record and 7,456 passing yards and 53 TDs during his time under center for the Sooners.
The Oklahoma offense put up solid numbers this year, averaging 36.4 points and 464.7 yards, but the team faltered to an 8-5 mark and lost to Clemson 40-6 in the Russell Athletic Bowl. As a result, both Heupel and Norvell took the fall.
"They're great people, they're great family men," Stoops said of Heupel and Norvell. "I thank them though for what they have contributed and their dedication and hard work through all these years, and I'm sure they'll continue to have successful coaching careers as they move forward."
Stoops indicated that no decisions have been made relative to filling the open positions on his staff.
"I just want to also say I'm more determined than ever to get Oklahoma back in the position to competing for national championships like we have so many other times," Stoops added.
