Longer distances in Bluegrass Singer's future

Bluegrass Singer, winner of Saturday's Mucho Macho Man Stakes at Gulfstream Park, is going to be stretching out in distance now that he established himself as a serious 3-year-old.

Trained by Marcus Vitali, Bluegrass Singer won the mile stakes by 1 3/4 lengths in front-running fashion.

"I always knew he had a lot of talent. I felt we would get our money's worth, but I didn't know how good he'd turn out," Vitali said.

Bluegrass Singer, owned by Crossed Sabres Farm, has now won his last two starts, both at a mile. Vitali is looking to send him even longer in the next race.

"I think we've prepared him for the two-turn challenge. I eased him into different distances feeling he was going to get better with each start," said Vitali. "He's probably the most laid-back horse in the barn. When you gallop him, you gallop with lose reins. Game day, I guess he puts his game face on, so to speak."

With the Florida Derby on March 28, Bluegrass Singer has two distance races leading to the 1 1/8-mile event. On Jan. 24 is the 1 1/16-mile Holy Bull followed by the 1 1/8-mile Fountain of Youth on Feb. 21.
