The decision would allow Kosovo to take part in qualifications for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio as well as future competition.

The executive board acknowledged that Kosovo has "met the requirements for recognition as outlined in the Olympic Charter", which include the technical requirements of Kosovo being recognized as a country.

Kosovo currently has 13 affiliated national federations for Olympic sports that include table tennis, archery, judo, sailing, weightlifting, modern pentathlon, wrestling, boxing, curling, taekwondo, gymnastics, skiing and handball.
