MIAMI, Oct. 9 (UPI) -- Former Miami Dolphins running back Larry Johnson was arrested early Tuesday for aggravated battery after a fight at a Miami nightclub.

Drew Johnson, a promoter for the club, said he saw Larry in the club before he was punched by the former NFL player. Drew said Larry started swinging a broken bottle before hitting him several more times.

Larry told officers he had approached Drew about taking drinks from the table and was shoved into the table after turning his back.

Johnson released a statement Wednesday denying accusations of assault. He was being held on $7,500 bond Tuesday morning.

"The charge for which I was arrested is false. The stories that have been reported in the media about the events leading to my arrest fail to accurately portray what really happened," Johnson said. "At the end of the day, when the truth comes out, the allegations that have been made against me will be shown to be completely untrue and confirm that I have committed no crime whatsoever."

Johnson was a first round draft pick for the Kansas City Chiefs in 2003 and played with the Cincinnati Bengals and Washington Redskins before joining the Dolphins in 2011.

He played just once for the Dolphins before he was cut by the team, and hasn't played in the NFL since.
