PERTHSHIRE, Scotland, Sept. 25 (UPI) -- The pairings for Friday's opening Ryder Cup session have been officially released and they promise a series of heavyweight tag-team matches in Gleneagles.

Players will compete in four separate matches over the course of the next three days, each pitting two teams of two against each other in fourball. In Fourball, only the best score for each team per hole is counted and compared. For example, when Jimmy Walker and Rickie Fowler take on Thomas Bjorn and Martin Kaymer, if Fowler bogies the first hole but Walker hits for par, Walker's score counts and will be compared to the Europeans. If their best effort on the same hole was birdie, the Europeans will come away from the first hole with a one stroke advantage.
