Braun gets 5-year extension from Sharks

Braun, 27, was slated to become an unrestricted free agent after this season.

"Justin has emerged as one of our most well-rounded and dependable defensemen," Sharks general manager Doug Wilson said in a statement on Wednesday. "He's an excellent skater who excels in matching up against the opponents top players on a nightly basis and fits in well with our core group of younger players. We feel Justin has just scratched the surface of his talent and we are excited to have him under contract for the next six seasons."

The Minnesota native played in all 82 games last season and was second on the team in average ice time (20:59).

Selected by the Sharks in the seventh round of the 2007 draft, Braun has posted eight goals and 38 assists in 217 career games.
