Redskins' Cofield lands on short-term IR

The Washington Redskins placed nose tackle Barry Cofield on injured reserve with a designation to return on Tuesday.

Cofield suffered a high ankle sprain in Sunday's 17-6 season-opening loss to the Houston Texans. He will be eligible to return for the Redskins' Week 11 game against Tampa Bay on Nov. 16.

The 30-year-old has started 81 straight games, the longest active streak among defensive tackles in the NFL.

Cofield has registered 304 tackles and 18 1/2 sacks in 128 overall games spanning nine seasons with Washington and the New York Giants.

Washington is now down two nose tackles after backup Chris Neild suffered a season-ending knee injury in the team's preseason finale.

Safety Akeem Davis was signed off the practice squad to fill the available roster spot.

In other moves, the Redskins addressed their practice squad by signing wide receiver Marvin McNutt, tight end Je'Ron Hamm and defensive lineman Derrick Hopkins, while releasing wide receiver Nick Williams and cornerback Richard Crawford.
