LAUSANNE, Switzerland, Sept. 9 (UPI) -- Seven-time Formula One champion Michael Schumacher has returned to his home in Lake Geneva, Switzerland, to continue his rehabilitation following the skiing accident that left him comatose in December 2013.

Schumacher's manager issued a statement Tuesday saying the retired racing driver had made "progress" in his recovery, but still has "a long and difficult road ahead."

"Henceforth, Michael's rehabilitation will take place at his home. Considering the severe injuries he suffered, progress has been made in the past weeks and months. We ask that the privacy of Michael's family continue to be respected, and that speculations about his state of health are avoided."

Schumacher underwent two surgeries to remove blood clots from his brain and later put into a medically induced coma to reduce swelling following his accident at French ski resort Meribel. The 45-year-old driver was rushed to a hospital in Grenoble after the incident and was released and transferred to a hospital in Lausanne, Switzerland, in June.

Schumacher's medical records were reportedly stolen and offered for sale to several publications. A man arrested on suspicion of leaking the content of the documents was found hanged in his cell in August.
