Virginia Tech extends Beamer's contract

Virginia Tech has extended the contract of head football coach Frank Beamer for two years, through the end of 2018.

"Announcing before our home opener serves as a tangible show of support for the winningest coach in college football who does it the right way, continues our positive momentum in recruiting, and signals the stability of leadership in our program," athletics director Whit Babcock said. "His stamp on our football program, and our institution, is indelible. This well-deserved extension is a reward for 27 tremendous years, certainly, but also is based upon my observations and work with him these past seven months."

The winningest active coach in FBS with 266 victories, Beamer has 21 straight bowl appearances, four ACC titles and six BCS appearances. He also has a trip to the national championship game.

"As I've stated numerous times, the only job I desire is right here at Virginia Tech," Beamer said. "This coaching staff is the best I've ever had. We've had an influx of talented, young student-athletes into our program and we're hard at work recruiting more just like them. So, I'm confident in the character and talent of our coaches, players and support staff."

The 67-year-old Beamer is 224-109-2 during his 27 years at Virginia Tech. Last year's team finished 8-5 overall, including a loss to UCLA in the Sun Bowl.

The Hokies open their 2014 season Saturday at home against William & Mary.
