Former Titans LB Shaw discloses ALS diagnosis

In a surprise announcement Tuesday, former Tennessee Titans linebacker Tim Shaw disclosed he is suffering from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, the motor neuron disorder also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease.

"I'm Tim Shaw. A year ago, I was playing NFL football. I've recently been diagnosed with ALS," Shaw said in a video posted on the Titans' official website. "I'm here today to stand up and fight with all of you against this disease."

After dousing himself with a bucket full of water, in keeping with a recent viral Internet trend which aims to increase awareness of the disease and attract donations, he challenged the Titans organization as well as his alma mater Penn State and its head football coach, James Franklin, to do the same.

Shaw played six NFL seasons from 2007-12, the last three with the Titans. He completed his career with 127 tackles over 80 appearances for Carolina, Jacksonville, Chicago and Tennessee.

A two-time special teams captain with the Titans, Shaw submitted his letter of retirement to the club in late March.
