Ohio Derby winner East Hall has begun his workouts at Gulfstream Park for a probable start in the $400,000 Super Derby on Sept. 6 at Louisiana Downs.
Trained by Bill Kaplan, the 3-year-old worked five furlongs in 1:02.81 Friday morning at Gulfstream Park with his regular jockey Juan Leyva riding.
"He's probably going to Louisiana Downs for the Super Derby," Kaplan said. "There are also a couple other races where he could go.
"He's improving. He's a very rideable racehorse. He does what the rider tells him, which makes him a very dangerous distance horse. He's got an explosive kick at the end."
East Hall won last month's 1 1/16-mile Ohio Derby with a furious rally down the stretch at ThistleDown Racino. Sent off at 9-1 versus 10 other 3-year- olds, East Hall broke from the far outside post and registered a head victory over 2-1 second pick Jessica's Star followed by 3-2 favorite Almost Famous.
East Hall has won three of 16 career starts for $360,370. Earlier this year, the 3-year-old was fourth in the Fountain of Youth, eighth in the Tampa Bay Derby, fifth in the Florida Derby and second in both the Sir Bear and Quality Road Stakes.
