The NCAA Board of Directors has approved changes that will allow the power conferences the opportunity to alter governing rules for its own purposes.
Calling it the autonomy governance system, the five most powerful leagues -- the ACC, Big 12, Big Ten, Pac-12 and SEC -- will be given the chance to make appropriate changes to rules that will include financial aid, expenses and benefits, meals, health and wellness, time demands and recruiting.
The 65 member institutions in the five conferences will each appoint one representative, while each of the five leagues will appoint three student- athlete representatives to cast votes on any proposed legislation.
An item will be approved with a simple majority vote by three of the five conferences and 60 percent of the 80 voting delegates, or a simple majority vote by four of the five conferences and a simple majority of the 80 voting delegates.
Autonomous legislation that is developed and adopted by the power five leagues may also applied by the remainder of Division I at each conference's respective discretion.
The Division I Board of Directors would have oversight responsibility.
