Moonshine Mullin returns in West Virginia Governor's Stakes

Moonshine Mullin, winner of the Stephen Foster Handicap, is the 8-5 morning line favorite for Saturday's $200,000 West Virginia Governor's Stakes at Mountaineer Park on the West Virginia Derby card.

Moonshine Mullin, trained by Randy Morse for owner Randy Patterson, has drawn post 7 in the nine-horse field with Hall of Fame jockey Calvin Borel riding.

The 1 1/16-mile Governor's Stakes is the 6-year-old's first start since defeating 5-2 favorite Will Take Charge in the $500,000 Foster Handicap at Churchill Downs on June 14.

"If he never wins another race, it's been a great ride," Morse exclaimed after the Foster win. "You never know, that's one thing about this sport, they come from everywhere. I'm very happy with him though."

The Foster win, at odds of 10-1, came after Moonshine Mullin won the Alysheba at Churchill in May and gave the horse his fifth straight win going back to February of this year.

"It was awesome, absolutely awesome. This was my first Grade I win, the Alysheba was my first Grade II win," Patterson said following the Foster.

Moonshine Mullin became a millionaire with the Foster victory and has won nine of 32 career starts.
