Cavendish pulls out of Tour de France

British rider Mark Cavendish withdrew from the 2014 Tour de France on Sunday because of a shoulder injury.

Cavendish was hurt during a crash late in Saturday's opening stage of cycling's most prestigious event. He and Australia's Simon Gerrans were battling toward the finish line when the two went down.

"I was hoping that the shoulder would swell down, but it was not the case, unfortunately," said Cavendish. "That's cycling."

Cavendish has won a stage 25 times at the Tour de France.
