RIO DE JANEIRO, June 30 (UPI) -- Some social media users, including Mexican actor Gael García Bernal, were outraged Sunday when a Dutch airline celebrated the Netherlands' 2-1 victory over Mexico with a tweet that read, "Adios Amigos!"
The tweet, which has since been deleted, also included a picture of a departures sign and a small cartoon of a man wearing a sombrero.
KLM apologized Sunday in a statement.— Digiday (@Digiday) June 29, 2014
"In the best of sportsmanship, we offer our heartfelt apologies to those who have been offended by the comment," said Marnix Fruitema, KLM's director general in North America.
In a similar incident last week, Delta Airlines apologized for tweeting a picture of a giraffe, representing Ghana, after the United States beat the West African nation 2-1. Delta deleted the tweet after many social media users pointed out that giraffes don't live in Ghana.
