Pirates, Angels swap relievers

The Pittsburgh Pirates acquired struggling reliever Ernesto Frieri from the Angels on Friday, in exchange for reliever Jason Grilli.

"We are appreciative of all that Jason has done for the Pirates and in our community," said Bucs GM Neal Huntington. "We believe that adding Ernesto Frieri was a good move for our bullpen. He has been an effective late inning reliever who, despite his struggles to date this season, has solid indicators that cause us to believe he will be a quality addition to our bullpen this season and potentially beyond."

Frieri went 0-3 with a 6.39 earned run average over 34 appearances for Los Angeles this season. The 28-year-old right-hander gave up nine earned runs and nine hits in three innings over his last five outings.

Grilli was 0-2 with a 4.87 ERA in 22 contests for the Pirates. He has allowed 11 earned runs and 22 hits over 20 1/3 frames thus far.
