Shared Belief headed to Los Alamitos Derby

Champion gelding Shared Belief will make his second start of the year on July 5 in the $500,000 Los Alamitos Derby at Los Alamitos Race Course.

Shared Belief, trained by co-owner Jerry Hollendorfer, is perfect in four career starts which includes wins last year in the Hollywood Prevue Stakes and CashCall Futurity, both at Hollywood Park.

A foot injury kept Shared Belief from competing in this year's Triple Crown races, but he won his 2014 debut effort on May 26 at Golden Gate Fields going six furlongs versus four older rivals.

"He came out of the race well and has been doing very nicely," the Hall of Fame trainer said.

"It (the foot injury) was just an unfortunate turn of events for the first half of the year. Our plan is to do well at the end of the year," Hollendorfer noted after this year's opening victory.

Shared Belief has earned $472,200 in his four career races. The gelding was voted the Eclipse Award as 2013 champion 2-year-old male after his undefeated season.

Expected to join Shared belief in the 1 1/8-mile Los Alamitos Derby is Candy Boy, winner of this year's Robert B. Lewis Stakes at Santa Anita. The colt, trained by John Sadler, is owned by C R K Stables and was second to Shared Belief in the CashCall Futurity.
