Moonshine Mullin becomes millionaire with Stephen Foster win

Moonshine Mullin, sent off at 10-1, pulled off another upset victory at Churchill Downs in Saturday night's 33rd running of the $500,000 Stephen Foster Handicap.

Coming off a win at Churchill Downs in the Alysheba Stakes last month, Moonshine Mullin was facing 6-5 favorite and Eclipse Award winner Will Take Charge along with 3-1 second pick Departing and 7-2 third choice and Pimlico Special champ Revolutionary in the nine-horse field.

Trained by Randy Morse and ridden by Hall of Fame jockey Calvin Borel, Moonshine Mullin gained an automatic spot in the starting field for the $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic in November by winning the 1 1/8-mile race.

The 6-year-old pressed the early pace being set by Jaguar Paw. He moved to the lead on the far turn, repelled Departing down the stretch and defeated Will Take Charge for the second straight time.

Moonshine Mullin registered a 1 3/4-length win over Will Take Charge followed by Departing, Mylute, Golden Ticket, Revolutionary, Long River, Prayer for Relief and Jaguar Paw.

The time for the Foster on a fast track was 1:49.66.

Owned by Randy Patterson, Moonshine Mullin added $328,848 to his earnings which now stand at just over $1 million. The horse has won nine of 32 career starts.
