Longshot Molly Morgan finally broke through for her first career stakes victory with an upset win in Saturday's $200,000 Fleur de Lis Handicap at Churchill Downs.
Trained by Dale Romans and ridden by Corey Lanerie, Molly Morgan got the best of 6-5 favorite On Fire Baby and 2-1 second pick Fiftyshadesofhay in the 1 1/8-mile race.
Sent off as a 10-1 longshot in the six-horse field, Molly Morgan came from last to defeat her fellow female thoroughbreds by four lengths with 5-2 third choice Flashy American getting second followed by Fiftyshadesofhay, Frivolous, On Fire Baby and pacesetter Ondine.
The time for the Fleur de Lis was 1:50.11 on a fast track.
Molly Morgan, owned by Bill Cubbedge, posted her first stakes win and fifth victory in 21 career starts. The $132,704 brings the 5-year-old mare's bankroll to $368,239.
On May 2 this year Molly Morgan finished second to On Fire Baby in the La Troienne Stakes at Churchill. Last year, she was seventh in Churchill's Fall City Handicap.
Molly Morgan returned $23.40, $7.80 and $3.60. Flashy American paid $4.80 and $3.00, Fiftyshadesofhay paid $2.80 to show.
