Champions Tour adds Tucson event to 2015 slate

The Champions Tour announced the addition of a new event for the 2015 season on Tuesday. The Tucson Classic will take place on the Catalina Course at Omni Tucson National Resort.

The event will feature a standard 81-player field with a $1.7 million purse.

"Tucson is going to be a popular city for our players as many of them experienced success here during their PGA Tour careers," said Champions Tour president Mike Stevens. "We are thrilled the Conquistadores have become involved with the Champions Tour and we look forward to a long partnership in Tucson."

The Conquistadores helped run a PGA Tour event in Tucson from 1966-2006.

"We think the fan base here will enjoy reuniting with many of their favorite players who competed at the Tucson Open," said Brandt Hazen, the Conquistadores' PGA Tour liaison .

Tucson hosted a professional golf event from 1945 through 2006. Some current Champions Tour players that won in Tucson include Jeff Sluman, Larry Mize, Mike Reid, Jim Thorpe, Tom Watson, Gil Morgan and Craig Stadler.

The Omni Tucson National Catalina Course played host to the PGA Tour more than 30 times. The 7,262-yard, par-73 course was designed by Robert Van Hagge and Bruce Devlin.
