O's place P Gonzalez on DL

The Baltimore Orioles placed pitcher Miguel Gonzalez on the 15-day disabled list Friday with a strained right oblique.

The move is retroactive to May 31, one day after Gonzalez allowed two runs on five hits and two walks over 6 2/3 frames in a 2-1 loss to the Houston Astros.

Gonzalez underwent an MRI on his right side Wednesday, which came back negative, but the Orioles decided a stint on the disabled list was necessary for the right-hander to fully recover.

Over 11 games, including 10 starts, this season, Gonzalez has gone 3-4 with a 4.17 earned run average.

Baltimore also recalled pitcher Tim Berry from Double-A Bowie, selected the contract of pitcher Evan Meek from Triple-A Norfolk and optioned right-hander Preston Guilmet to Norfolk on Friday.

Berry has yet to appear in the majors since being selected by Baltimore in the 50th round of the 2009 MLB Draft. The 23-year-old left-hander has gone 3-3 with a 4.12 ERA over 11 starts at Bowie this season.

Meek made 12 appearances for the Orioles earlier this season and went 0-1 with a 6.94 ERA, while Guilmet has pitched to an 0-1 record with a 5.79 ERA over nine games with Baltimore in 2014.
