Marlins shut out the Rays

Henderson Alvarez notched his third shutout of the season as the Miami Marlins defeated the Tampa Bay Rays 1-0 on Tuesday.

Henderson Alvarez notched his third shutout of the season as the Miami Marlins defeated the Tampa Bay Rays 1-0 on Tuesday.

Alvarez (3-3), who left his last start against the Nationals with elbow tightness, allowed eights hits with no walks and five strikeouts. He has not surrendered a run in 21 straight innings.

Garrett Jones scored the game's lone run and Marcell Ozuna doubled as the Marlins won their second straight game.

James Loney and Yunel Escobar both supplied two hits and Kevin Kiermaier tripled for Tampa Bay, which lost its eighth straight game and 10th in a row on the road.

Chris Archer (3-3) gave up one run on five hits with eight strikeouts over seven innings to take the loss.
