John Daly admits to gambling away $55 million because of 'stupidity'

DARDANELLE, Ark., May 30 (UPI) -- It's fairly well-known that professional golfer John Daly has a number of vices, including drinking, smoking and over-eating.

However, after a new interview that Daly conducted with Yahoo! Sports, it sounds as if the PGA pro's worst habit might be gambling.

During the interview, Daly said that he may have gambled away as much as $57 million because of "stupidity."

According to Daly, he had to go through his tax records to see how much he had lost because he "really didn't know."

"I was shocked. It thought it would have been $20 (million), $25," Daly said. "I had no idea it was $55 to $57 million. It's just crazy."

Daly was named PGA Rookie of the Year in 1991 and Comeback Player of the Year in 2004.

"I should say I regret it," Daly said. "But I did it; I move on from it, I had a lot of fun doing it. It was . . . from 1991 to 2007. I love the action. I love the adrenalin going in there. When I was playing a lot of blackjack, you could play seven hands at any amount you wanted. Now I think it just three hands all over the world. I would play seven hands at ($5,000) to $15,000 a hand back then."

According to the Golf Channel, Daly only collected about $10 million in course earnings during his PGA career, so the bulk of his money may have came from endorsements and public appearances.
