Starting pitchers Josh Beckett of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Adam Wainwright of the St. Louis Cardinals were named National League Co-Players of the Week for the period ending May 25.
On Sunday, Beckett threw the first no-hitter of the 2014 season in a 6-0 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park. Beckett recorded the 21st no-hitter in franchise history, which is the most of any Major League franchise. Hideo Nomo had been the last Dodgers hurler to hold the opposition hitless, in a 9-0 victory at Colorado on Sept. 17, 1996.
Beckett finished the week with a 2-0 record, a 2.57 ERA and 12 strikeouts. This is the second career Player of the Week honor for the three-time All- Star.
Wainwright paced the big leagues with 21 strikeouts last week while posting a perfect 2-0 record with a 0.00 ERA. He led the National League with 17.0 innings pitched across his two starts in which he scattered six hits and walked only one.
Beckett's teammate Yasiel Puig of the Dodgers, Milwaukee's Carlos Gomez and Jonathan Lucroy, Miami's Marcell Ozuna, Atlanta's Justin Upton and Julio Teheran, David Wright of the New York Mets and Washington's Doug Fister were also considered for the award.
