A's acquire Blanks from Padres

The Oakland Athletics acquired outfielder Kyle Blanks from the San Diego Padres on Thursday.

In exchange, the A's sent minor league outfielder Jake Goebbert and a player to be named later or cash to San Diego.

Blanks, 27, hit .200 with a run scored in five games for San Diego this season. In 27 games for Triple-A El Paso, he hit .265 with five doubles, nine home runs, 20 RBI and 15 runs scored.

Blanks has a career .228 average with 36 doubles, two triples, 28 home runs, 98 RBI and 91 runs scored in 239 games across six big league seasons, all with the Padres.

He is expected to join the A's on Friday when the team is in Cleveland.

To make room for Blanks on the roster, the A's designated first baseman Daric Barton for assignment.

Barton hit .158 with five RBI this season.

Goebbert, 26, hit .257 with seven doubles, one triple, six home runs, 25 RBI and 21 runs scored in 31 games for Triple-A Sacramento this season. He will be assigned to Triple-A El Paso.
