"We are very disappointed to learn of the allegations involving Greg and are concerned for all parties as we continue to investigate," the Panthers said in a statement.

According to the paper, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police responded to a call around 4:18 a.m. ET. A woman, who said she and Hardy had been in a relationship since September, said she had been physically assaulted and threatened by Hardy.

Hardy tied a franchise record with 15 sacks in 2013. The Panthers placed the franchise tag on him at a cost of $13.1 million this season.

The Panthers agreed recently to give Hardy as much as $1.3 million - 10 percent of his franchise tag - if he attends all of the team's voluntary offseason workouts, which are ongoing.

A sixth-round steal by the Panthers in the 2010 draft, Hardy has 33 sacks in 62 career games with Carolina.
