NEW YORK, May 11 (UPI) -- New York Rangers' Martin St. Louis' mother died unexpectedly Thursday and just a few days later -- on Mother's Day -- the forward scored the opening goal in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup playoff series against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
St. Louis rushed home to be with his family just after his mother's sudden death in Montreal and one day later he was back on the ice for Game 5 of the second-round series against Pittsburgh.
He was back on the ice again Sunday, Mother's Day, and one can only guess at how emotional the day must have been for him.
It perhaps got even more emotional just 3:34 minutes into the game when he scored the opening goal against the Penguins.
St. Louis picked up the puck as a keepsake after the play.
The Rangers went on to win the do-or-die game, 3-1. The series is going to Game 7 in Pittsburgh on Tuesday.
