Madison Bumgarner, Yasiel Puig have words on field

LOS ANGELES, May 11 (UPI) -- Things got a little chippy Friday between pitcher Madison Bumgarner and Yasiel Puig during the San Francisco Giants' 3-1 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Depite the win, Bumgarner let through one home run, hit by Puig during the sixth inning.

As Puig made his way around the bases, Bumgarner got close enough on the last stretch to offer a few words to No. 66.

Puig later said he didn't know what Bumgarner said, but he apparently took it as a taunt because he seemed pretty upset on the field and responded.

Maybe Bumgarner was upset about the home run, maybe he was upset about Puig's bat flip or maybe the leisurely stroll around the bases set him off.

"It surprised me a little that he was there," Puig said. "I may have done something he didn't like. From my perspective, it's part of the game."

Bumgarner wasn't very candid about what was said on the field in his post-game interview with MLB.com.

"I was just congratulating him. That was a really good swing. I don't know why everybody got so mad. That was pretty impressive. I don't know what happened. Again, I don't know why everybody got so mad. It escalated quickly for no reason. I think he said, 'Thank you,' I'm not sure if he did. I don't speak Spanish very well," Bumgarner said.
