The Houston Texans passed on a quarterback to open the second day of the 2014 NFL Draft, but the Oakland Raiders wasted little time adding one with their second-round pick.
The Raiders chose Fresno State triggerman Derek Carr with the fourth selection (No. 36 overall) of the second round, three spots after the Texans kicked things off by grabbing UCLA guard Xavier Su'a-Filo.
Carr, the younger brother of former Texans No. 1 overall choice David Carr, became only the fourth quarterback in FBS history to throw for over 5,000 yards and 50 touchdowns during his senior season with the Bulldogs. The two- time Mountain West Player of the Year will compete with veteran addition Matt Schaub to start under center in Oakland.
"I am going to come in and work, compete and try and make the team better," said Carr in a conference call following his selection. "I'm not a selfish guy, that's for sure. I can't wait to get coached by those coaches."
The Jacksonville Jaguars also landed a prolific college star in the second round, using the No. 39 overall pick on USC wide receiver Marqise Lee.
The 2012 Biletnikoff Award winner, Lee racked up 118 catches for 1,721 yards and 14 touchdowns as a sophomore with the Trojans but saw those numbers dip during an injury-plagued junior campaign.
"I think I'll fit in great," said Lee. "Once I go over [the offense] and get a great understanding of it, I think it'll be okay."
The second pick of the day saw a trade conducted between NFC East rivals Dallas and Washington, with the Cowboys moving up from No. 47 to No. 34 to take Boise State defensive end Demarcus Lawrence.
Dallas also shipped its third-round selection (No. 87) to the Redskins, who did not have a first-round pick as part of the blockbuster 2012 trade with St. Louis that enabled them to take franchise quarterback Robert Griffin III. Washington decided on Stanford pass rusher Trent Murphy following the trade- down.
Cleveland nabbed Nevada offensive lineman Joel Bitonio prior to the Raiders' selection of Carr, with Atlanta then taking Minnesota defensive lineman Ra'Shede Hageman and Tampa Bay obtaining Washington tight end Austin Seferian- Jenkins at No. 38.
Three consecutive trades took place following the Jaguars' choice of Lee. Detroit and Seattle switched places, with the Lions going from No. 45 to No. 40 to grab BYU linebacker Kyle Van Noy. St. Louis climbed three spots to No. 41 via a deal with Buffalo and picked Florida State defensive back Lamarcus Joyner, right before Philadelphia vaulted 12 slots to secure Vanderbilt wide receiver Jordan Matthews following a swap with Tennessee, which ultimately made Washington's Bishop Sankey the first running back taken of this year's class at No. 54.
Two other running backs were picked shortly after Sankey, with Cincinnati landing LSU's Jeremy Hill with the 55th pick and Ohio State's Carlos Hyde going to San Francisco at No. 57 after a trade with Miami.
The Bills obtained Alabama offensive tackle Cyrus Kouandjio after moving down. The reigning Super Bowl champion Seahawks, who traded out of Thursday's first round, took Colorado wideout Paul Richardson at No. 45.
Indianapolis, which dealt its first-rounder to Cleveland for running back Trent Richardson last September, plucked Ohio State offensive tackle Jack Mewhort with its initial pick of this draft at 59th overall. Three spots later, New England selected Eastern Illinois quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, the 2013 Walter Payton Award recipient.
No quarterbacks came off the board in a third round that was highlighted by the Rams' selection of Auburn running back and 2013 Heisman Trophy finalist Tre Mason at 75th overall.
