Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Boston Bruins president Cam Neely issued a statement Friday expressing outrage towards fans who aimed racial slurs at Montreal Canadiens defenseman P.K. Subban through social media following the previous night's Game 1 of the Eastern Conference semifinals.
Subban scored the deciding goal in double overtime of Montreal's 4-3 win at TD Garden, triggering a slew of racially charged remarks on Twitter. Subban, the 2013 Norris Trophy winner, is of African-Canadian descent, his parents having emigrated from Jamaica and Montserrat.
"The racist, classless views expressed by an ignorant group of individuals following Thursday's game via digital media are in no way a reflection of anyone associated with the Bruins organization," said Neely.
Subban's younger brother, Malcolm, was selected in the first round by the Bruins in the 2012 NHL Draft and currently plays for the team's American League Hockey affiliate in Providence.
The incident is not the first of its kind involving Bruins' fans. The club put out a similar statement after Washington Capitals forward Joel Ward scored the game-winning goal in overtime to defeat Boston in Game 7 of an opening-round series in 2012.
