Spurs' Townsend to miss World Cup with ankle injury

London, England (SportsNetwork.com) - Tottenham-Hotspur and England national team midfielder Andros Townsend will miss the remainder of the Premier League season and this summer's World Cup after being ruled out for 10 weeks with an ankle injury.

Townsend, 22, came on for the final 12 minutes of Saturday's 1-0 victory over Stoke City, but suffered damaged ligaments and left the Britannia Stadium in a protective boot.

He will undergo surgery on Thursday after scans revealed the extent of the damage.

The injury is another blow to the Three Lions, who have already lost Arsenal forward Theo Walcott to a torn anterior cruciate ligament, as manager Roy Hodgson prepares his team for the World Cup, which begins in Brazil on June 12.

Townsend made his England debut in October, scoring in a 4-1 victory over Montenegro. He also played a key role in the side's win over Poland to secure a place in the competition.

Hodgson will name his 23-man squad, plus seven alternate players, on May 12.
