New York, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Philadelphia Phillies catcher Carlos Ruiz was named the National League Player of the Week for the period ending April 27.
Ruiz led the majors by batting .500 (11-for-22) along with a .593 on-base percentage, while topping the National League by accumulating seven RBI and 20 total bases and finishing second with eight runs scored and a .909 slugging percentage.
The veteran backstop finished 7-for-14 with four doubles, a triple, one home run and six RBI as the Phils took three of four from the Dodgers in Los Angeles, then produced a key RBI single to kick-start a comeback from 5-2 down to beat Arizona 6-5 on Saturday. In the process, Ruiz extended his hit streak to nine games against the Diamondbacks.
Other players considered for the weekly honor were Phillies outfielder Ben Revere, Cincinnati starter Johnny Cueto, Nationals starter Tanner Roark, Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen and Giants outfielder Hunter Pence.
