SEATTLE, April 24 (UPI) -- The Seattle Seahawks released a statement on Wednesday informing their fans that Super Bowl-winning quarterback Russell Wilson is filing for divorce from his wife of two years, Ashton.

Wilson, who has known Ashton since high school, called it a “difficult decision.” He began dating the 26-year-old while they were both going to North Carolina State. They eventually married in January 2012 in Virginia.

“I have made the difficult decision to file for divorce,” Wilson said in the statement. “Clearly, decisions like these don’t come easy. Ashton and I respectfully ask for prayers, understanding and privacy during this difficult time. Moving forward, I will have no further comment on this personal matter.”

He apparently felt it was important to let fans know about his marital situation.

The Seahawks won the Super Bowl last season after Wilson helped lead them than a 13-3 record in the regular season. The 25-year-old is in the third year of his four-year rookie contract.

Seattle will open the NFL season with a home game against the Green Bay Packers.
