Tigers place Putkonen on DL, bring up Martinez

Detroit, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - The Detroit Tigers placed reliever Luke Putkonen on the 15-day disabled list and purchased the contract of outfielder J.D. Martinez from Triple-A Toledo on Monday.

Putkonen lands on the DL, retroactive to Saturday, with right elbow inflammation. He has allowed eight runs and six hits in two appearances for the Tigers this season.

Martinez was tearing it up in the minors, leading the International League with 10 home runs and a .846 slugging percentage while hitting .308 with 22 RBI in 17 games.

The 26-year-old Martinez played 252 games with the Houston Astros from 2011-13, batting .251 with 24 homers and 126 RBI.

To make room from Martinez on the 40-man roster, the Tigers transferred outfielder Andy Dirks (back surgery) to the 60-day DL.
