(SportsNetwork.com) - The Colorado Avalanche hope to extend a seven-game point streak on Tuesday night as they visit the Edmonton Oilers.
The Avalanche had a six-game winning streak snapped with Sunday's 3-2 shootout loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins. The point gave Colorado 107 on the season, two points up on the third-place Chicago Blackhawks in the Central Division and four back of the first-place St. Louis Blues.
Both the Blues and Avalanche have four games left to play -- St. Louis hosts the Washington Capitals on Tuesday -- while the idle Blackhawks have three games remaining.
Ryan O'Reilly and Patrick Bordeleau each potted a third-period goal for the Avalanche, but Tyson Barrie, O'Reilly and Gabriel Landeskog all failed on their shootout attempts.
Semyon Varlamov made 30 saves through overtime and stopped James Neal's first- round attempt, but was then bested by Jussi Jokinen in the second round on a wrister.
"We came out in the third and we really wanted to finish strong," Colorado's Nathan MacKinnon said. "It's just good to get that extra point tonight. We just gained one on St. Louis."
The Avalanche begin a season-ending four-game road trip, while the Oilers kicked off their own four-game homestand to end the season with Sunday's 4-2 triumph over the Anaheim Ducks.
Viktor Fasth made 34 saves, while Justin Schultz, Taylor Hall and David Perron all scored in the second period. Jordan Eberle added an empty-netter for the Oilers, who sit at the bottom of the Western Conference.
"The guys fought for everything for me today," Fasth said.
Eberle, Hall and Perron all scored their 27th goal of the season and Hall was named the NHL's First Star for the week on Monday. He led all players with seven assists and nine points, and has totaled 27 goals and 50 assists this season.
Varlamov, meanwhile, was named the Second Star, going 3-0-1 with a shutout, a 1.42 goals against average and a .950 save percentage.
The Oilers won their fourth straight game over the Avalanche with an 8-2 victory at home on Dec. 5, with Hall potting a hat trick to go along with an assist.
Varlamov allowed all eight goals on 28 shots in the loss, but he rebounded to make 27 saves in a 4-2 home win over the Oilers on Dec. 19.
Edmonton has won five of seven and seven of the previous 11 meetings overall, taking three in a row and eight of the last 11 at home versus Colorado as well.
