Holiday, Rapinoe help U.S. women top China

Commerce City, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - Goals from Lauren Holiday and Megan Rapinoe helped the United States women's national team to a 2-0 win over China in a friendly on Sunday.

After dominating much of the first half the Americans finally broke the deadlock in the 39th minute when a shot from Heather O'Reilly was blocked straight into the path of Holiday, who lashed a first-time shot into the lower left corner of the net from the edge of the penalty area.

The U.S. continued to press for more goals and Holiday nearly doubled her tally early in the second half when her close-range effort was blocked on the goal line by a Chinese defender.

But Rapinoe handed the Americans a second goal 12 minutes from time to wrap up the win when she curled a free kick into the penalty area from the left wing that skipped through the face of goal and inside the far post.

After winning just one of its four games at the Algarve Cup last month, Sunday's result is a positive one for the U.S. women, who will return to action on Thursday against China in another friendly.
