Nashville, TN (SportsNetwork.com) - The Tennessee Titans have released running back Chris Johnson.
The Titans made the decision after an unsuccessful effort to trade the six- year veteran.
"We have had an open dialogue with Chris' agent, Joel Segal, over the last few weeks, and we appreciate the patience and professionalism they have shown throughout this process," said Titans general manager Ruston Webster in a statement Friday. "We made an effort to trade Chris but were unable to do so.
"We wish Chris the best and thank him for the six seasons he spent with us."
Johnson ran for 1,077 yards with six touchdowns and added 42 receptions for 345 yards with four scores in 16 games last season. His 3.9-yard rushing average, however, was the lowest figure of his six-year career.
He also underwent minor knee surgery in January.
The East Carolina product has run for at least 1,000 yards in each of his first six NFL seasons, including 2,006 yards with 14 touchdowns in 2009. He also has 2,003 career yards receiving with eight scores.
"As an organization, we want to thank Chris for his contributions to the Titans," Webster added. "Chris produced many memorable moments, broke franchise records and was durable over his six year career with our team."
Johnson was the 24th overall selection in the 2008 NFL Draft. He missed just one game in his six seasons with the franchise.
