Washington, DC (SportsNetwork.com) - The Boston Red Sox were honored for their World Series championship by President Barack Obama on Tuesday at the White House.
"I thought I invited the Red Sox here today, but there must be a mistake because I don't recognize all these clean-shaven guys," joked President Obama. "Beards or no beards, it is an honor to welcome the 2013 World Series champion Boston Red Sox to the White House."
Obama singled out a few members of the team in his remarks, including World Series MVP David Ortiz, who presented the President a Red Sox jersey.
The President also praised the Red Sox for their contributions to helping the city of Boston recover from last April's Boston Marathon bombings.
"There was something about this particular squad that was special," said the President. "Not just because they went from worst to first, but because they symbolized grit and resilience of one of America's iconic cities in one of its difficult moments."
The Red Sox had Tuesday off after opening their 2014 campaign with a 2-1 loss to the Orioles in Baltimore on Monday.
