Berkeley, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - University of California head men's basketball coach Mike Montgomery will officially announce his retirement on Monday.
Hired by the Golden Bears on April 5, 2008, Montgomery guided Cal to its winningest six-year stretch in school history and completed his career with 130 victories in six seasons, good for third on the school's all-time wins list.
Cal went 21-14 last season, culminating in a loss to SMU in the NIT.
Prior to his stint with the Golden Bears, Montgomery served as the head coach of the NBA's Golden State Warriors from 2004-06, but was fired after consecutive 34-48 finishes.
Before joining the Warriors, Montgomery spent 18 seasons at Stanford, one of Cal's fiercest rivals, and guided the Cardinal to a 393-167 record, becoming the school's all-time winningest coach. A four-time Pac-10 coach of the year, Montgomery led the Cardinal to 12 NCAA Tournament appearances and to the 1998 Final Four. Stanford won four regular-season Pac-10 titles, and one Pac-10 Tournament under his watch.
Montgomery ranks third in conference history with 282 league wins and is No. 25 on the NCAA Division I men's basketball wins list with 677.
