Michael Schumacher remains in coma, condition unchanged

GRENOBLE, France, March 7 (UPI) -- French doctors treating Formula One racing legend Michael Schumacher said his condition has not changed since his late December head injury.

Doctors at Grenoble hospital said German racer Schumacher, 45, has been in a medically-induced coma since he suffered a severe head injury while skiing in the French Alps Dec. 29 and doctors began trying to gradually wake him up Jan. 30, Italian news agency ANSA reported Friday.

"Michael is still in the wake-up phrase," Sabine Kehm, Schumacher's manager, said Friday. "The situation has not changed."

Investigators said Schumacher, who won seven world titles with the Ferrari racing team, was not speeding recklessly or attempting to help a young girl at the time of the accident, despite some early reports.

Doctors said Schumacher would have died if he had not been wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, which is still under investigation.
