Sens, Phillips agree to extension

Ottawa, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - The Ottawa Senators came to terms with Chris Phillips on Wednesday, as the sides agreed to a two-year extension to keep the veteran defenseman with the club through the 2015-16 season.

Phillips was set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer and he was the subject of trade rumors before signing for $5 million over two years.

The 35-year-old blueliner has spent his entire NHL career with the Senators after being selected by Ottawa with the first overall pick of the 1996 draft. He has recorded 283 points on 71 goals and 212 assists in 1,125 career games.

Phillips has one goal and 12 assists in 52 games for the Senators in 2013-14 -- his 16th season with the franchise.
