INDIANAPOLIS, Feb. 25 (UPI) -- Champions Tour golfer Steve Elkington may want to re-think his social media usage after teeing off on gay NFL hopeful Michael Sam on Twitter on Tuesday.
Elkington apparently had an issue with ESPN’s coverage of Michael Sam at the NFL Combine and decided to air his grievances for the world to see.
ESPN covering Michael Sam as a gay athlete is embarrassing .....— Steve Elkington (@elkpga) February 25, 2014
Perhaps ripping into Sam was just Elkington’s way of giving himself a birthday present.
The 1995 PGA Championship winner kept going about the way that ESPN was covering Sam’s attempt to become the first openly gay player in the NFL.
ESPN reporting Michael Sam is leading the handbag throw at NFL combine.... No one else expected to throw today— Steve Elkington (@elkpga) February 25, 2014
After criticism on Twitter…
.@elkpga You're an idiot.— Tom Crabtree (@itsCrab) February 25, 2014
@elkpga really? .... really?????— dianagram (@dianagram) February 25, 2014
…Elkington attempted to take a step back.
@shanebacon I'm for Sam I'm against ESPN telling me he's gay....— Steve Elkington (@elkpga) February 25, 2014
This isn’t the first time Elkington has gotten himself in trouble on Twitter. During the 2013 Senior British Open, Elkington apologized after he posted a series of tweets that criticized the city of Southport and used an offensive term to describe Pakistani people.
Oops. He tweeted again. Steve Elkington, that is. Dumb tweet alert in 3..2..1: http://t.co/zI44PfMWds— Golf Channel (@GolfChannel) February 25, 2014
