Islanders place captain John Tavares on injured reserve

UNIONDALE, N.Y., Feb. 24 (UPI) -- High-scoring New York Islanders center John Tavares Monday was placed on injured reserve after suffering a knee injury during the Winter Olympics.

Tavares, the Islanders' team captain and third-leading NHL scorer, was playing for Team Canada in Sochi, Russia, when he tore the meniscus in his left knee in a quarterfinal game against Latvia.

He has been ruled out for the rest of the season, finishing with 66 points, including 24 goals and 42 assists, over 59 games.

It is not yet clear if Tavares -- who has led the Islanders in scoring in each of his five seasons -- will need surgery.
