Gulbis won titles last year at Delray Beach and St. Petersburg.

In Marseilles, he defeated Nicolas Mahut in the quarterfinals and top-seeded Richard Gasquet in the semis before knocking off Tsonga, who won last year's event in a final against Czech Tomas Berdych.

Tsonga fell to 10-9 in ATP finals.
