Switzerland, Britain reach semis in women's Olympic curling

SOCHI, Russia, Feb. 17 (UPI) -- Switzerland won a showdown with China Monday to join Canada, Sweden and Britain in the semifinals of the women's Olympic curling tournament.

Japan, meanwhile, missed out on a chance at a semifinal berth when it fell to Sweden in the closing session of the round-robin phase of the Olympics.

Canada will meet Britain and Sweden will take on Switzerland in Wednesday's semifinals. The gold medal game will be played Thursday.

China had a 4-3 record in the nine-game, round-robin event when the day began, but saw its chances for a medal disappear with an 8-5 loss to Japan in the morning and a 10-6 defeat at the hands of Switzerland in the evening.

With a semifinal berth on the line, the Swiss jumped to a 4-0 lead over China through two ends and held on the rest of the way.

Canada finished the round-robin tournament unbeaten in its nine games, finishing things off with a 9-4 victory over South Korea. Sweden wound up in second place at 7-2 while Britain and Switzerland were both 5-4. Britain made it into the semifinals despite an 8-7 loss to Denmark in its final game.

Japan, Denmark and China all wound up with a 4-5 record, Russia and South Korea were 3-6 and the United States finished last at 1-8.

Sweden is trying for its third straight gold medal in women's curling. Canada won the silver four years ago and China captured the bronze.
