SOCHI, Russia, Feb. 17 (UPI) -- Highlights from Monday's action at the Winter Olympics:
-- The United States won two medals, leaving the Americans and Russians tied for the most in these Games with 18. One of the U.S. medals was the first gold for a United States couple in the history of Olympic ice dancing. The other, a bronze, was the first two-man bobsled medal for the Americans in 62 years.
-- Meryl Davis and Charlie White won the ice dancing gold, opening the door for a lucrative career in skating shows that tour the nation. Steven Holcombe drove the U.S. sled to the third-place finish and he hopes to do better than that in the four-man event, where he is defending champion.
-- The day began with lots of fog still hanging around the mountains, so much so that it postponed both the men's snowboard cross event and the men's 15-kilometer biathlon mass start race. It was the second postponement in as many days for the biathlon competition, one in which Norway's Ole Einar Bjorndalen will try to set an Olympic record for most medals won.
-- Once the fog drifted away, the women took to the course for their biathlon mass start race and when the 12.5 kilometers of skiing and shooting concluded the winner turned out to be Darya Domracheva of Belarus. It was the third gold medal of the Olympics for Domracheva, the only person to have pulled off that feat.
-- Belarus was not through for the day when Domracheva crossed the finish line. Another athlete from Belarus, Anton Kushnir, won the men's freestyle skiing aerials, giving that country five golds for the Sochi Games. Only Germany, with eight, has won more.
-- Germany's eighth gold medal of the Olympics came in team ski jumping, an event the Germans also won four years ago. None of the four members of the German team that won a gold medal on Monday were on the team that was victorious in Vancouver.
-- The Canadian women's curling team completed a perfect record in the nine-game round-robin portion of the Olympic tournament. The Canadian men, meanwhile, finished the preliminary portion on a seven-game winning streak. Canada will be joined in the women's semifinals by Sweden, Britain and Switzerland. The men's semifinals will involve Canada, Sweden, China and either Britain or Norway, which will meet on Tuesday in a tiebreaker game.
